It can be one of life’s biggest challenges to make your passions and your profession align. Often, those nagging material needs push us to compromise on our dreams in the name of financial security. Those of you who are retirement planning in the Newport Beach area may be dedicating a large amount of energy to securing your financial future in retirement. What can be overlooked is all the living you’re going to have to do once you retire.

That Living takes planning, too. Even if you’re a decade or more away from retiring, we suggest making 2017 a year for finding out more about yourself. As you see fewer people, naturally most find in retirement that their lifestyle becomes more introverted, and if you were used to a more extroverted schedule, it can be a rough transition. With a little planning, particularly beforehand, you can prepare yourself to get the most out of your schedule when you’re retired.

One of our clients loves to surf. After retiring, and through a good deal of introspection about what was important to him, he arrived at a plan to offer surfing lessons to disabled veterans. As an extroverted retiree, he had a very specific vision for what would provide him fulfillment, and through a little hard work, made his vision a reality.

As you read this, you may simply have the goal of getting to retirement. I’d challenge anyone who is thinking along these lines to dig deeper. For those who will enjoy a full retirement from work, you’re confronted with an immense gift: that of free time. Regardless of whether your goals are deeply motivated and extroverted or more modest and reserved, you’ll find that more than ever, you will be free to pursue your passions. In order to properly pursue those passions, you need to know what they are! There’s no problem if just relaxing is a main retirement goal of yours—my recommendation is to take your free time and make retirement an opportunity for growth, and that can take many different forms.

If you feel like you’re lacking direction in articulating your passion, consider getting help. For couples entering retirement, I often recommend seeking out a relationship counselor, even if you don’t consider you and your partner to be having “problems.” It can be amazing how an external third party can help you to vocalize things you wouldn’t normally make an effort to express. One potential result of talking with a counselor is that it can help you express more about yourself, your values, and your goals, and perhaps spark your creative fire for planning your next step.
